The SEC regular season is half over and we’ve learned a lot.
Some teams have impressed, some not. Some have lived up to expectations and, well, some haven’t.
Here are five things we have learned so far this season:
1. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is human. After taking a brutal hit against Kentucky that resulted in a severe concussion, “Superman” looked mortal against LSU.
2. Alabama is the real deal. The Crimson Tide had high expectations coming into the season and haven’t disappointed. Bama … Read More »

Five things to look for this season in the SEC
The 2009 SEC football season finally is upon us, and what a way to start.
Florida, Alabama and Ole Miss are in the Top 10 with Georgia and LSU lingering around on its cusp. But before we things get crazy, let’s take a gander of a few things to keep an eye on this season.
1. Quarterbacks: Tim Tebow and Jevan Snead lead the pack when it comes to QBs in the SEC but I don’t think the SEC is suffering as … Read More »

“Best case/Worst case; MSU
The Mississippi State Bulldogs ” myself included ” have a lot to be excited about this season.
The enthusiasm new head coach Dan Mullen brings to Starkville has overshadowed the forcing out for Sylvester Croom and helped Bulldogs fans forget last season’s terrible results.
Mullen began by surprising a number of people by signing a respectable 2009 recruiting class ” 15th by Rivals.com and 19th by Scout.com ” highlighted by junior college … Read More »

It’s time to play “Best case/Worst case.”
Between now and the beginning of the season, I’m going to look at each team’s upcoming schedule and give – what I think – the best case and worst case scenario that team could hope for.
The Rebels are first. Why you say? I don’t know. Could be they ended the season by crushing Texas Tech and was arguably the hottest team in the SEC at the end of the season.
They also have the highest expectations.
The Rebels finished … Read More »

I got football on the brain
Who says it’s too early for college football? It’s never too early.
I think it’s time to reveal my post-spring SEC Power Rankings.
1. Florida Gators — Like the man said, “To be the man, you have to beat the man.” Florida has showed no signs of fading into the dark. Tim Tebow is back and the defense remains strong. Don’t be surprised to see backup quarterback John Brantley get some snaps with Tebow lining up as a receiver. I … Read More »

Manny of Manny, how could you
There are a number of stories making the headlines this week.
To begin with, Manny Ramirez was suspended 50 games for a positive drug test. I knew sooner of later having Ramirez on my fantasy team was going to come back and bite me.
Along with the many other fantasy owners, I’m scrambling to find a replacement outfielder. I’m looking for suggestions.
This is beyond “Manny being Manny.” This isn’t like the A-Rod issue, not like Bonds and not like … Read More »

First month surprises of the MLB
It has been a wacky start to the 2009 Major League Baseball season.
Probably the biggest surprise of the season as been the lack of consistency of the Yankee’s pitching staff. As of Friday afternoon, not a single pitcher has over two wins.
Andy Pettitte has been the New York’s best pitcher with an ERA of 2.96 and a 2-1 record.
This is not impressive since CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Joba Chamberlain and Chien-Ming Wang’s total salaries equal more than some … Read More »

Fantasy baseball wisdom needed
Fantasy baseball wisdom needed
Baseball is officially underway and with it the turmoil of my first fantasy league too.
Missing draft day due to being sick may have been a blessing in disguise. I don’t think I could have done a better job.
As far as pitching, Chad Billingsley, AJ Burnett, Roy Halladay and John Maine round out my starting rotation. My relieve pitchers are Carlos Marmol and Troy Percival.
The only thing I don’t have as far as pitching is depth. … Read More »

This week’s odds and ends
This week’s odds and ends
My NCAA bracket is officially busted. Well almost busted. The Memphis loss killed me. I should have put a little more thought in picking them to go to the Final Four.
But on the bright side, Pittsburgh remains in the hunt for the time being – that could all change over this weekend.
As everyone already knows, Alabama is in the process of making a run at Anthony Grant for the vacant basketball head coaching position … Read More »

Miss. State, Tennessee; Let’s get it on
The match-up is set. Tennessee, Mississippi State square-off in today’s SEC Tournament Championship Game at noon on CBS. This may seem like a surprise match-up to most people, but not me. I thought MSU had the tools to make a run to the final and Tennessee’s only potential speed bump was Auburn ” the Vols destroyed the Tigers, 94-85.
The Bulldogs and Vols first tangled on Feb. 25. The result was an 81-76 win for Tennessee.
Freshman guard … Read More »
